Biosolids Recycling Featured at VA State Fair Exhibit

After Tropical Storm Ophelia swirled through the fairgrounds leaving some serious mud in her wake, crowds came out in full force to enjoy Virginia’s State Fair, Your Fair, Your Way, offering agricultural attractions along with classic rides, foods, and competitions for all.

VBC creatively demonstrated the benefits of recycling biosolids by allowing the young and young at heart to learn about biosolids. Biosolids are an endlessly renewable resource containing valuable nutrients and organic matter which are used to improve soils on farms and forests. Municipal utilities employ the same processes that nature uses to clean wastewater during treatment. In streams and lakes, natural aeration helps purify the water, while good bacteria and microorganisms break down solids. Municipal utilities do the same thing but use engineered technology and regulated processes. Biosolids are recovered as a result of these processes.

VBC enjoyed hundreds of visits from school groups, families, farmers participating in the Virginia biosolids program and those who are interested. The Council also was delighted to welcome Governor Glenn Youngkin and Lt. Governor Winsome Sears to its educational booth during the fair.

In addition to those who wanted to learn more about biosolids, the booth’s attractions brought fun and giggles to our visitors – of all ages.

VBC extends its deepest appreciation to wonderful volunteers for your time and dedication! Without you, the booth would not have been such a success!
